Our Approach to SAT Preparation
Practice with the right questions
There is no shortage of SAT practice material on the internet. The problem is that much of it isn't very good.
Our philosophy at Ambassador Academics is simple: effective test preparation should be built around high-quality practice questions that closely resemble what students will actually encounter on test day.
We want students to spend as much of their preparation time as possible doing SAT problems—not just watching videos, memorizing tricks, or working through generic math and English exercises.
A typical cycle looks like this:
Practice → Analyze → Learn → Practice Again
When a student misses a question, we want to know why. Was there a gap in the underlying math or grammar? Did the student misunderstand what the question was asking? Was there a faster approach? Was timing the problem? Did the student fall for a predictable wrong-answer choice?
That diagnosis tells us what to teach next.
Start with official College Board questions
Whenever possible, we prioritize questions written by the people who write the SAT.
The College Board Student Question Bank contains thousands of official SAT and PSAT questions and allows students to filter by section, domain, skill, and difficulty.
It is one of the most useful SAT preparation resources available—and it's free.
Students should also use the official College Board practice tests. Full-length digital tests in Bluebook are especially important because they reproduce the adaptive format students will encounter on test day.
For students and tutors who prefer working through questions on paper, College Board also provides official printable SAT practice tests with scoring guides and answer explanations. These tests are nonadaptive, so they don't perfectly reproduce the digital testing experience, but the questions remain an excellent practice resource.
Use excellent teachers to understand the questions
A correct answer isn't enough. Students should understand why an answer works and, whenever possible, how to solve the problem efficiently.
We understand that paid sessions may not work for everyone. Two free resources we particularly like are:
Tutorllini Test Prep — An excellent resource for SAT Math instruction, problem solving, and worked examples. Tutorllini's approach is especially useful for seeing different ways of attacking difficult SAT Math problems.
Settele Tutoring — An outstanding collection of SAT resources, particularly for Reading and Writing. The Settele SAT Resource Library includes lessons, guides, question-bank work, practice-test resources, and strategy instruction.
These resources are useful because they complement official questions rather than replacing them.
Don't waste good practice questions
One of the biggest mistakes students make is racing through practice material.
A difficult SAT question is often more valuable after you answer it than before.
For every missed question—and sometimes for questions answered correctly for the wrong reason—we encourage students to ask:
What was this question testing? Why did I miss it? What should I recognize next time? Could I solve it more efficiently?
Then find several more high-quality questions testing the same skill.
Twenty carefully selected questions, thoroughly reviewed, can be far more valuable than 100 questions completed without reflection.
Practice tests are data
We don't view a practice SAT simply as a way to generate a score.
It is a diagnostic tool.
The results help us identify patterns: algebra weaknesses, vocabulary-in-context questions, transitions, advanced math, careless errors, pacing problems, difficult second-module questions, or inefficient calculator use.
That information should determine what a student practices next.
Over time, the process becomes increasingly targeted:
Take a test. Find the weaknesses. Practice those weaknesses. Learn from the mistakes. Test again.
That's the core of our SAT preparation philosophy.

The goal isn't to do every SAT question you can find. The goal is to learn as much as possible from every good SAT question you do. Reach out if you would like to find our more about individual or group sessions.
